Mom’s are Amazing! Celibacy is Necessary!

MOM’S ARE AMAZING! CELIBACY IS NECESSARY!!

This is a quick reflection on something that just happened.

I just had one of the most amazing mom’s I’ve known stop by to receive the Eucharist, because she is enroute to visit siblings overseas who are experiencing turmoil, so she will have no way to attend Mass on Sunday.

She went on to list all of the sickness in her family (her children) and the incredibly packed schedule of her kids. She said this all with a big smile on her face, like she was saying without saying, “I was created for this.” My immediate response to her was, “I just LOVE MOMS!”

But, then, I followed this praise of moms to say, “Don’t forget, I am here. If you need ANYTHING, I even deliver. Confessions, Communion … ANYTHING!”

We had this conversation in my entryway, as she was about to leave. She was going back to “what she was created for,” while I was returning to my empty rectory. I will be praying and studying and teaching (like writing this reflection) and being as extravagant as I can be in offering the Sacraments. And, I will be ready and waiting and, therefore, AVAILABLE to my family … the precious and amazing People of God.

You see? I don’t have my own sick kids and their busy schedules of sports practices and doctor’s appointments and play rehearsals and school events, and the cooking and the cleaning and shopping and the washing, and, and, and …

I can only observe what I see are the demands of family life from a distance, but I also watched my own loving and dedicated parents who, with enormous smiles on their faces, multitasked for their kids in ways that rise to the level of the miraculous.

Let priests be free to be DADS for their flock. Let priests be celibate.
